Dry Eyes, a Colorado dilemma?

It has been said that Colorado is the dry eye capital of the United States due to our high altitude and extremely low humidity throughout the year. In the Denver area, this dry eye climate is further exacerbated by increasing levels of smog and air pollutants in general. Statistics show that at least 10% of the population have dry eye syndrome but realistically in the Colorado environment, the figures are much higher. Individuals with dry eye problems usually exhibit burning, stinging and dryness of their eyes. They may actually notice that there is too much tearing, leading to constant tears presenting throughout the day. Although it doesn't make sense that an increased tearing may signify dry eye, the reason is that this type of dry eye is due to reflex tearing, caused by some external irritant. The resultant tears produced are not of the same quality as the normal, natural tear, which is needed for optimum ocular health.

If you are an outdoors person, this dry eye condition may be worse when you are outside than when you are inside your home, with the exception being in the dead of winter, when you have the heat going all day and night. A humidifier may be helpful in your bedroom to help you sleep at night and lubricating eyedrops may help during the day. Our doctors at Eyecare Consultants Vision Source prefer Systane Ultra due to its excellent mechanism of action and the fact that it seems to work better than any other drop on the market.

If this doesn't help enough, however, since we do so much dry eye treatment in our office, you would be well-served to make an appointment with one of us at 303-771-4221. We will try to determine if your dry eye condition is primarily due to a tear deficiency or has evaporative causes. Depending upon the etiology, we will find the best treatment program for you. Give us a call today before this relatively aggravating condition gets worse and becomes chronic in your life.

A Facebook Photo May Have Saved a Girl's Sight

    Incredible Eye Facts

Often taken for granted, your eyes are a wonderful and vital part of your life. Eyes are your most precious sense. Below are some incredible Eye Facts.

    Incredible Eye Facts

    • Eyes are the most complex organs you possess except for your brain.
    • Are composed of more than two million working parts.
    • Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the US. Yet, glaucoma can be controlled with little or no further vision loss, if detected at an early stage and treated promptly.
    • Glaucoma occurs more frequently in certain groups of people such as those who are over 40, diabetics, and people who are very nearsighted.
    • The number one cause of blindness in adults in the United States is diabetes.
    • Under the right conditions, can discern the light of a candle at a distance of 14 miles.
    • The Human eye can detect 10 million color hues, but cannot see ultraviolet or infrared light.
    • 85% of what we know comes through our eyes. 80% of our memory is in the form of images.
    • On average we blink our eyes between 10,000 - 20,000 times a day.
    • The "blink of an eye" lasts only a tenth of a second, but that's all the time needed to clear away dust particles and spread lubricating fluids across the eyeball. Our brains have been trained to ignore blinks.
    • Our eye muscles that move the eye are the strongest in the body
    • Human eyes are always the same size from birth, but your nose and ears never stop growing.
    • The older we are the less tears we produce.
    • Foods shown to help vision are those that are rich in vitamin A which are needed for night vision such as carrots and other orange foods that contain carotene which the body converts to vitamin A.
    • A professional eye exam can detect early signs of health and sight-threatening diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Together with other tests, eye professionals can also detect neurological disease and glaucoma, a potentially blinding disease if left untreated. Early detection and prevention are crucial to the successful treatment of these diseases.
    • Pediatric and Infant Exams are very important. Physician will perform a quick screening for your child for gross abnormalities at the hospital when your child is born. Vision for an infant is almost adult like before they are one year old. We recommend that your child have their first eye exam at age six to eight months. A comprehensive eye exam can pick up subtle problems that, if left untreated, can cause severe, often irreversible vision loss.

Women Are Three Times More Likely To Suffer Dry Eye Syndrome Than Men

Everyone experiences these symptoms from time to time: Burning, irritable eyes and/or sensation that something is actually scratching the eye. But for some 3 million American women the symptoms are chronic, according to your Colorado Vision Source Optometrists. These women suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome.

Tears are essential for good eye health. They lubricate the eye, protect it from infections and wash away allergens. With Dry Eye Syndrome, the eyes produce too few tears or tears of such poor quality that they don’t stay on the eye. Ironically, some people with Dry Eye Syndrome may actually experience tears running down their cheeks.

Everyone experiences reduced tear production as they age, but women are more prone to Dry Eye Syndrome than men by a 3 to 1 margin. Studies have shown that hormone therapy may increase the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome, as can birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and certain anti-depressants.

“April is Women’s Eye Health Awareness Month and we want women to know there are several options for managing Dry Eye Syndrome” as stated by your Colorado Vision Source Optometrists.

Those options include lubricating drops that can minimize the dry, scratchy sensation, prescription eye drops that can actually improve tear production and inserts place under the eyelid that slowly release lubrication throughout the day.

“Through a procedure called lacrimal occlusion, we can also temporarily or permanently close the tear ducts to prevent tears from draining away too quickly.” See the Colorado Vision Source Optometrist in your area.

How Eyes of Owls and Humans are similar

Owls and people both have binocular vision. Binocular vision is when the two eyes are in front of the head and see the same thing with both eyes. Binocular vision also helps by seeing how fast an object is going, how far away it is and the size.

Humans have a field of vision of 180 degrees and 120 degrees with each eye. Owls only have a 125 degree field of vision, 50 degrees with each eye.

Owls can't move their eyes around in their sockets so they must move their head. Owls have fourteen neck bones. Their neck bones let an owl turn its head 270 degrees in both directions. This is not quite a full turn. Unlike us, an owl can turn its head around to see what is sneaking up behind it.
