• Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the US. Yet, glaucoma can be controlled with little or no further vision loss, if detected at an early stage and treated promptly.
• Glaucoma occurs more frequently in certain groups of people such as those who are over 40, diabetics, and people who are very nearsighted.
• The number one cause of blindness in adults in the United States is diabetes.
• Under the right conditions, can discern the light of a candle at a distance of 14 miles.
• The Human eye can detect 10 million color hues, but cannot see ultraviolet or infrared light.
• 85% of what we know comes through our eyes. 80% of our memory is in the form of images.
• On average we blink our eyes between 10,000 - 20,000 times a day.
• The "blink of an eye" lasts only a tenth of a second, but that's all the time needed to clear away dust particles and spread lubricating fluids across the eyeball. Our brains have been trained to ignore blinks.

Women Are Three Times More Likely To Suffer Dry Eye Syndrome Than Men

Everyone experiences these symptoms from time to time: Burning, irritable eyes and/or sensation that something is actually scratching the eye. But for some 3 million American women the symptoms are chronic, according to your Colorado Vision Source Optometrists. These women suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome.

Tears are essential for good eye health. They lubricate the eye, protect it from infections and wash away allergens. With Dry Eye Syndrome, the eyes produce too few tears or tears of such poor quality that they don’t stay on the eye. Ironically, some people with Dry Eye Syndrome may actually experience tears running down their cheeks.

Everyone experiences reduced tear production as they age, but women are more prone to Dry Eye Syndrome than men by a 3 to 1 margin. Studies have shown that hormone therapy may increase the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome, as can birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and certain anti-depressants.

How Eyes of Owls and Humans are similar

Owls and people both have binocular vision. Binocular vision is when the two eyes are in front of the head and see the same thing with both eyes. Binocular vision also helps by seeing how fast an object is going, how far away it is and the size.

Humans have a field of vision of 180 degrees and 120 degrees with each eye. Owls only have a 125 degree field of vision, 50 degrees with each eye.

Owls can't move their eyes around in their sockets so they must move their head. Owls have fourteen neck bones. Their neck bones let an owl turn its head 270 degrees in both directions. This is not quite a full turn. Unlike us, an owl can turn its head around to see what is sneaking up behind it.
